Faux Shaft & Coupling
During my introduction to industrial maintenance we machined a faux shaft and coupling so we could get familiar with different machine shop equipment. This allowed us to be introduced to how to do many different machining processes correctly and safely.

01
We followed a print that was designed by my instructor. For many of us, this was the first time ever using machine shop equipment so we were assisted with each step until we were comfortable around the machinery.
02
These are some of the machines we used to create our faux shaft and coupling. They included a bandsaw, lathe and milling machine.

03
We cut the stock on the band saw to specific lengths. Then used the lathes to turn down the shaft to a specific diameter and added chamfers to all the edges. To make the keyway, we used a milling machine.
04
To create the coupling, we used the lathe to bore out the center, a press to cut the keyway, a milling machine to drill the hole for the set screw and then tapped the threads.

Conclusion
This was a great introductory project that introduced me to how to use machine shop equipment. It was frustrating at first, but it was a valuable learning experience. I would love to talk in depth with you about the process and what I learned!
